When You Should Elope in Lake Tahoe & How to Pick Your Date

Eloping in Lake Tahoe offers a unique blend of adventure and natural beauty, but choosing the perfect time requires careful consideration. Winter and spring bring unpredictable weather, with snow and road closures being common challenges. However, if you’re up for an adventure and prepared for the unexpected, this season can provide stunning snowy landscapes for your elopement. Summer, particularly June through August, offers warmer temperatures and endless outdoor activities, but beware of crowds and potential forest closures. September and October present a magical option with milder weather and vibrant fall colors, making it ideal for a serene and picturesque elopement experience amidst Lake Tahoe’s breathtaking scenery.

Lake Tahoe Elopement Locations

Lake Tahoe boasts several breathtaking locations perfect for elopements, each offering its own unique charm and stunning vistas.

Emerald Bay: Iconic granite cliffs and azure waters provide a majestic backdrop for exchanging vows.

Sugar Pine Point State Park Pier offers a serene and romantic setting, with its rustic pier stretching out into the crystal-clear lake.

Tahoe Paradise Park provides a tranquil forested escape, ideal for intimate ceremonies surrounded by towering pine trees.

Logan Shoals Vista Point offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, creating a picturesque setting for saying “I do.”

Sand Harbor State Beach dazzles with its golden sands and turquoise waters, offering a picturesque beachfront locale for a memorable elopement ceremony.

How to Get a Marriage License

To obtain a marriage license for your Lake Tahoe elopement, you have a couple of options depending on whether you plan to marry on the California or Nevada side of the lake. For California, visit any County Clerk’s Office in the state with a valid ID and $90-$100 cash or check. Remember, the license is valid for 90 days, and you can marry anywhere in California, regardless of where you obtain it. If you’re on the Nevada side, ensure your officiant is certified in Nevada, and you can acquire the license at Washoe, Carson City, or Douglas Counties. Whether you choose California or Nevada, ensure you have an officiant and witness organized in advance for your elopement!

What to Wear to Your Elopement

For your Lake Tahoe elopement, consider the natural surroundings and varying weather conditions. Opt for layers to accommodate temperature changes, including a stylish jacket or shawl. For a rustic mountain vibe, earthy tones or jewel hues complement the landscape beautifully. Choose attire that allows movement for hiking or exploring, such as flowing dresses or tailored suits. Comfortable footwear, like boots or sturdy shoes, is essential for traversing uneven terrain. Accessories like hats, scarves, or sunglasses not only add flair but also protect against the elements. Above all, select attire that reflects your personal style and makes you feel confident amidst Tahoe’s breathtaking scenery!

How Much Does a Lake Tahoe Elopement Cost?

The cost of a Lake Tahoe elopement typically ranges from $60 to $100 for obtaining marriage licenses in California or Nevada. However, the total expense can vary based on factors such as location, vendors, and specific services you desire. From photography to officiant fees, venue rentals, permits and any additional accommodations or activities, you can budget to your needs for your dream Lake Tahoe elopement. Whether you envision an intimate ceremony by the lake or a mountaintop exchange of vows, your day can be anything you want it to be, depending on your specific needs.

Lake Tahoe Elopement Logistics

To make your trip to Lake Tahoe hassle-free, it’s a good idea to book your flights and accommodations in advance since many people visit this popular destination. There are two airports that provide easy access to the lake. If you’re going to North Lake Tahoe, you can fly into RNO – Reno/Tahoe International Airport, which is less than an hour’s drive away. If you’re getting married on the western or southern side of Lake Tahoe, you can fly into SMF – Sacramento International Airport, which is a little over an hour’s drive away. For exploring off-road areas, it’s recommended to rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. There are many types of accommodations available, from camping to luxury resorts, so you’re sure to find the perfect place to stay and enjoy your special occasion.

SHALL WE MEET?

HI FRIENDS

I’m Kirsten—a wedding photographer here to guide you through this wildly exciting time…and toward the best lighting.

Ever since my days in the highschool darkroom, I’ve been enamored with the power images have to tell a compelling story. I went on to study photography and fashion at Savannah College of Art & Design and worked as an editor for a studio before founding Kirsten Marie Photography in 2012. Every day since, and I’ve fallen deeper in love with the art of wedding photography—there’s just nothing quite as fascinating and fulfilling as documenting the tenderness weddings bring out in people.

As someone who’s fairly spotlight-shy, I know how awkward being photographed can feel—which is why I work to bring an atmosphere of ease (and a wicked sharp sense of humor) to our time together. I pour my whole heart into hyping you up, getting you the material you deserve, and making sure you feel comfortable and cared for.

Beyond the lens, I’m a mom to two feisty girls. Translation: there’s no group I can’t wrangle, no mountain I can’t summit, and no trail I can’t traverse. While you’re soaking in sunsets and sipping champagne—you can find me crawling through bushes and traipsing through snowpack to get the best angle…and loving every single second of it.
